Kuta? Kinnim? Sat La'? Chawa? BUGS!

The girls came home with a letter from the school nurse yesterday saying, "a student in your child's kindergarten class has head lice". That's all I needed to read---- I felt lightheaded, sweaty, dizzy, faint. I couldn't even continue reading the letter--- I had to return to it later to read the part about checking your child's head and what to look for.

I googled head lice last night and read about how to identify lice/nits and how to treat them until I saw those yicky bugs in my sleep.

What, I ask you, WHAT am I going to do if Gracie gets head lice with all of that hair? I can *possibly* deal with Sophie getting it--- I can see myself sitting and picking out louse like a stinkin' monkey. But Grace? She has more hair than about 3 people put together. I gooped up her hair this morning with tons of hair gel and then braided it tightly because I heard through the grapevine that if you have a lot of product in your hair then the critters tend not to stick. I certainly hope that's good info.....

I'm afraid. Very afraid.

LOL, I start itching as soon as I hear the word head lice!! My boys have never had it. I think for girls, keep their hair in a tight ponytail and plait it. That way, their hair isn't flying around everywhere. And I think headlice like clean hair. I don't wash the boys hair every night, maybe once a week when it's going around.

Good luck!

Though my kids have never had lice (knock on wood), I am like the louse expert. Being a kindergarten teacher for 18 years will do that. I've seen it all! I think there has only been one or two years when someone hasn't gotten lice. This is what I've learned. I'm passing my wisdom on to you: Lice hate dirty hair. Do not wash the girls' hair for as long as humanly possible. They also don't like coconut, so when you have to wash their hair, get cococut shampoo. A good salon will have kid shampoo that is coconut based for this very purpose. Lice don't like heat either, so if you use curling irons or flat irons, that will help. They also don't like chemically treated hair, so now is the time to have the girls' hair permed or highlighted! We had rampant outbreaks of lice at the inner city school where I used to teach. None of the Hispanic kids got it because most of the girls had chemically treated hair (yes, in kindergarten), and none of the African American kids got it (the lice can't adhere well to the shaft of African American hair). Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the chemical lice treatment as a preventative. It not only does not work preventatively, but it can be very dangerous. Only use it if they get lice. And if they do, you're screwed! Bag all the stuffed animals for 3 months. Strip the bed and wash all bedding, blankets, dress up clothes, etc. in the hottest possible water and dry on the hottest drier setting. Vaccuum the living daylights out of your house, too. Boil all combs and brushes--or better yet, throw them away. I'm itching as I write this. Ugh...

OMG, I hate the head lice with a passion! We had it all year round in Ridgefield our last school year there, never ending story!! Hated it!! Had at least 3 rounds of it going around the class... luckily the girls only got it once, but still!

Ugh! Guess what! I got them in my class already, too. Today a mom sent in a note telling me to check all the kids' heads b/c her daughter had been treated over the weekend. I shipped everyone to the nurse. So far, so good. But I figure it's only a matter of time. Scratch, scratch, scratch...
