9-11

I remember being terrified on 9-11 living so close to NYC and working only a couple of blocks away from Yale, where Barbara Bush was attending Yale. Nearly everyone I know has a friend or neighbor who knows someone who worked in the towers or died in them. My neighbor three doors down, who worked in Tower 2, took the day off from work that day.

My husband took the train down to ground zero the day after 9/11 to help out. He helped unload water and other supplies that had been donated. I remember him telling me that there were so many volunteers that it was actually hard to find something to do. We also went to a Broadway show about only a couple of weeks after 9/11. I remember being slightly afraid of going into the city and how completely oddly void of people Time's Square was, but I also remember on the drive home being able to see the beacons of light that replaced the towers and feeling a sense of hopefulness.

Now the city is more than back to normal. Time's Square is busier than ever and the security guards/military with dogs and machine guns have left Grand Central. :-)
