Weird Word Wednesday

Do you know why I love blogging?  Because you're able to make friends from all over the country.

For example, lets take my friend Wendy.  She is my "sister from another mister",  and we have never actually met face to face.  But I have learned from her some very weird words that we southern midwest people just don't get.... and that made me begin to think about how people use phrases or words from different parts of the country.

Here is one of my favorites:  pop.  We call any carbonated beverage "pop" in my neck of the woods.  My friend Wendy calls it "soda".  That sounds absolutely bizarre to me.  My friend from Texas calls it "Coke".  Yes, it's all Coke.  She will say, "Hey Wyndee, do you want a Coke?"  When I say yes, she then asks "what kind?".   You must answer "what kind?" with Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Pepsi, etc.  Weird, huh?  ;-)

Another one of Wendy's words is "wicked", and I'm not talking about being evil.  She says things like, "That's wicked funny" or "It's wicked cold outside".

Yet another word is "creek".  We pronounce it as "crick".

Another one is the town, Miami, as in Miami, FL.   We have a nearby Oklahoma town that is also named Miami, but we pronounce it as "Miamah", and you can bet that if you say it wrong we'll make fun of you.  ;-)

Something that drives me insane is the use of the word y'all.  Saying y'all doesn't drive me insane, but it's WHO says it that drives me insane.  If you talk as though you just walked off of the set of the Sopranos, then you danged well shouldn't be adding y'all into your sentence.  It's just weird.... and you must learn how to use it correctly in a sentence.  Singular is "y'all".  Plural is "all y'all".  I'm not joking here.
Southern English spoken in the purple areas---apparently someone actually did a study on this.  What a waste of money.  And could somebody tell me why there is a little dot in California and the very tip of the boot of Louisiana is missing?????  Isn't Louisiana about as south as you can get?

Can  you think of others?  ;-)

Well, I had no warning that I was going to be featured in this post. Wow, I guess I should be flattered...or something. The thing is, I get what you mean when you say "pop" as in "soda pop," I just don't say it. The coke thing you talked about? Now that I don't get. Because Coca Cola doesn't even make all those products. What about Pepsi?? Does your friend call Pepsi Coke?

Here are some: What are the big, long sandwiches filled with meat? They're grinders or subs here. A crick is what I get in my neck after cradling the phone to my shoulder after a long conversation. A creek is what people fish in, though we hardly ever use creek here; we use stream or brook. Laura Ingalls Wilder lived on the shores of a creek.

I think that tip of LA is out because maybe they speak Creole or Cajun or something and not true "Southern English."

In any event, this was a wicked interesting little post you put up. Now, I think I'm going to sit back and enjoy a soda.

Yes, my friend calls EVERYTHING Coke. It doesn't matter who makes the products. They're all Coke. ;-)
